New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia will not face any further legal action after his domestic violence charges were dropped, but his trouble with Major League Baseball is not over.
Sources told Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News that Familia will likely face a suspension of at least 30 games under the league’s domestic violence policy. There is an ongoing investigation and no timetable for a final decision by commissioner Rob Manfred.
The charges against Familia were dropped Thursday with the support of his wife, the alleged victim.
As has been noted before, MLB’s policy does not require guilt in order to punish. Aroldis Chapman was never even charged and he got this ban, which may well be the precedent the league uses when determining possible punishment for Familia.
