Marlins’ Straily, Mattingly ejected after trading HBPs with Giants
Two members of the Miami Marlins were ejected from Tuesday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants after the teams traded hit by pitches.
In the top of the second inning, Giants pitcher Dereck Rodriguez plunked Lewis Brinson to load the bases. Brinson had a big hit off Hunter Strickland the night before. The Giants reliever was so upset about blowing the game that he punched a door and injured his hand.
Rodriguez received a warning after hitting Brinson.
In the bottom of the second, you’ll never guess what happened. Marlins pitcher Dan Straily gave up two runs and then decided to plunk Buster Posey. He was immediately ejected, and so was Marlins manager Don Mattingly.
There’s even more background to this story. Straily was the Marlins pitcher who hit Evan Longoria with a pitch last week, leading Longoria to need surgery on his hand.
It’s hard to say that Straily didn’t have it coming.
