Mets, Blue Jays agree to Marcus Stroman trade

Marcus Stroman

One of the most-discussed trade targets has found a new home.

The New York Mets agreed to acquire pitcher Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, as first reported by Jon Morosi. The Mets gave up two minor-league pitchers, Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods-Richardson, as part of the deal (more on them here).

Stroman is in the midst of his best MLB season, with a 2.96 ERA in 21 starts. That made him one of the hottest names on the market, and he was expected to help a contender. The Mets are not that. They’re five games under .500 and six games out of the second NL wild card. This move is likely about 2020, as Stroman is under contract for next season and the Mets believe they can contend that quickly.

It’s not clear if this means anything on the Noah Syndergaard front. The right-hander has featured heavily in trade rumors, and there was even chatter that the Mets could use some pieces from a Syndergaard deal to land Stroman. It appears they didn’t even have to take that step.
