New York Mets fans just wanted to witness history on Monday, and they were denied it by their own team’s pitcher.
With former Mets star slugger Pete Alonso making his first appearance at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y., since signing a 5-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles in December, Mets fans packed the stadium, with many hoping to see him hit his 300th career home run at his old stomping grounds.
Alonso got his first chance to hit that milestone homer in the first inning against Mets starter Jonah Tong, but he flied out after four pitches. He got another crack at it in the third inning, but was instead walked by Tong on a 3-2 count. That prompted loud boos from the Alonso home run-thirsty crowd as Alonso made his way to first base.

Alonso had two more plate appearances after that, but he grounded out in the fifth inning, still against Tong, and struck out swinging in the eighth inning versus Mets reliever Dedniel Nunez. The five-time All-Star Alonso ended up going 0-for-3, but the Orioles still came away with a 2-1 win.
Mets fans still have two more games to watch Alonso try to hit his 300th homer in the big leagues at Citi Field before the season ends, including Tuesday’s matchup.
