The New York Mets are giving a well-deserved honor to their old captain.
In a post to social media on Monday, the Mets announced that they plan to retire David Wright’s No. 5 jersey number. The Mets will also be inducting Wright into their Hall of Fame during the jersey retirement ceremony on July 19.

Wright, now 42 years old, was a rare Mets lifer who spent his entire MLB career in the organization from 2004-18. The righty-hitting third baseman was a seven-time All-Star in New York and also won two Gold Gloves plus two Silver Slugger Awards with the team. While the second half of Wright’s career was marred by injuries, he still put together a strong overall body of work with a .296 career batting average and an .867 career OPS.
Also just the fourth team captain in Mets history (after Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, and John Franco), Wright has since moved onto a role in the Mets front office as a special advisor. He was once even linked to the team’s managerial position but will instead now settle for induction into the Mets Hall of Fame as well as a spot in the rafters for his No. 5 jersey.
