MySpace founder offers to pay the Giants to re-sign Tim Lincecum

If the San Francisco Giants wind up making a bid to bring long-time starter Tim Lincecum back to The Bay for another hurrah, they may be getting a boost from a surprise donor: Tom from MySpace.

Tom Anderson, the founder of the now all-but-defunct social network MySpace, took to Twitter on Tuesday to publicly offer that should the Giants re-sign Lincecum, he would foot the bill.

Can we keep @timLincecum if I pay for it? #6manrotation ! @sfgiants @knbr @extrabaggs @mccoveychron pic.twitter.com/tQG2jmG0Mt

Lincecum, now 31, went 7-4 with a 4.13 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 15 starts for the team last season. He hasn’t looked like an MLB-caliber starter in years now, and despite some reported interest in a return, the Giants would probably be best off thanking Lincecum for his service and moving on.

But there’s something oddly poetic about Anderson offering to pay for the Giants to bring back the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner. Maybe it’s that both re-signing Lincecum and logging into MySpace will make you feel like you’re still in 2008, but I digress.

In any case, should the Giants decide to kick the tires on a Lincecum return, they can probably expect the full $7 in net profit MySpace earned last quarter to arrive from Anderson via check in due time.
