Forget coin flips or random number generators. The Philadelphia Phillies have elevated fantasy football draft order determination to an art form involving golf clubs, gravity, and a trash can.
On their off day, Trea Turner and Garrett Stubbs scouted Citizens Bank Park for the perfect launching pad. They settled on a handicapped seating area in the 300 level after realizing every other spot risked sending ricocheting balls into someone’s teeth. The grounds crew kindly removed a railing, then put it right back once the competition ended.
Roughly four and a half hours before Friday’s game, a dozen participants (some sharing teams, so one representative each) took turns launching golf balls toward a makeshift hole — a trash can parked in center field. Closest to the can claimed the highest draft slots.
Kyle Schwarber, never one to miss a long ball, took first place. Bryson Stott and Stubbs rounded out the top three.
Chase Shugart earned style points by smoking the State Farm sign near Monty’s Angle. The ricochet somehow improved his result, though it still landed him last.
Other clubs have tried parachuting army figures, throwing baseballs off massive outfield walls, or charging hefty buy-ins. The Phillies simply went higher.
When the season’s grind meets August fantasy fever, nothing settles the order quite like teeing off from the cheap seats and hoping your ball finds the can instead of the warning track.
