Rangers’ Gallo scratched after batting practice mishap

Texas Rangers slugger Joey Gallo was not in the lineup for Friday’s game against the Detroit Tigers after a bizarre mishap during batting practice.

Rangers executive vice president of communications John Blake tweeted that Gallo was scratched after colliding with teammate Delino DeShields Jr in the outfield during batting practice. After originally saying that Gallo had a “little” blurred vision, Blake later added that Gallo suffered a contusion to his left eye and would be undergoing further examination.

The 24-year-old Gallo is one of the Rangers’ prized young talents and has already hit 21 home runs this season after clubbing 41 of them in 2017.

Gallo was also involved in another collision with a teammate last season that landed him in the concussion protocol. He was out of the lineup for a total of seven games as a result.
