Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Amed Rosario got clocked in the face by a 100-mph fastball during his team’s Saturday contest against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Rays held a 1-0 lead when Rosario came up to the plate with two outs in the top of the first inning at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pa.

With the count at 1-1, Pirates catcher Jason Delay appeared to be setting up for a low fastball. However, Pirates starter Jared Jones severely overthrew the heater and accidentally hit Rosario in the face.

Rosario immediately crumpled to the ground while holding onto the left side of his face. On-deck hitter Jose Siri ran to Rosario’s aid and called for medical assistance.

The flap on Rosario’s helmet likely spared the Rays infielder from suffering a much more serious injury. He was taken out of the game for what the team called “facial lacerations.”

Rosario spoke to reporters via his translator after the game. He indicated that he “felt good” and had needed just two stitches after the incident.

Rosario entered Saturday’s contest with the highest batting average on the Rays roster. The 8-year veteran has batted .301 with 2 home runs and 24 RBIs across 59 games played.
