Red Sox acquire Ian Kinsler from Angels

The Boston Red Sox are doing what they can to solidify their roster entering the home stretch of the season.

Boston acquired Ian Kinsler in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal first reported.

The 36-year-old second baseman is only batting .239 with a .710 OPS this season, but he’s been hot lately. He pounded eight home runs in June, and he has batted .320 in July.

The Sox could use some extra infield depth with Rafael Devers hurt and Dustin Pedroia out. They’ve recently played Eduardo Nunez at third and Brock Holt at second, and even had Blake Swihart play a little at second and third.

Kinsler could give them another option and some more reliability and consistency from the second base spot. Kinsler is making $11 million this season. The Angels will pay half of the remaining $3.6 million Kinsler is owed. In return, Boston is sending them two pitching prospects, Ty Buttrey and William Jerez.
