Report: Red Sox aren’t serious players for Edwin Encarnacion

Edwin Encarnacion walk-off

Pump the brakes on the Edwin Encarnacion in Beantown talk for now.

According to a report by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports on Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox aren’t considered serious players at the moment for Toronto Blue Jays free agent slugger Edwin Encarnacion. Instead, they are said to be focusing on shorter-term options such as Carlos Beltran and Kendrys Morales.

The 33-year-old Encarnacion, who batted .263/.357/.529 with 42 home runs and 127 RBIs in 2015, wants some big money this offseason and is already being drawing interest from a number of other American League teams.

The Red Sox are currently in the market for a designated hitter after the retirement of franchise icon David Ortiz. But the three-time All-Star Encarnacion, who could just end up re-signing with the Blue Jays as well, may ultimately be a little too rich for their blood.
