Red Sox top prospect Jason Groome to undergo Tommy John surgery
The Boston Red Sox are having a great season so far, but they are facing some bad news on their top prospect.
Jason Groome, whom they took No. 12 overall in 2016, will undergo Tommy John surgery in Los Angeles next week.
Groome, a 6-foot-5 southpaw, struck out 10 batters over 6.2 innings in 2016. He went 3-9 with a 5.69 ERA across two levels last season before a flexor strain ended his season. Despite the poor record and ERA, Groome showed promise by striking out 72 batters in 55 innings.
Groome entered this season still bothered by the strain and was on the DL. Now he will undergo Tommy John surgery, which will cost him all of this season and likely extend well into next year.
You may recall that we covered Groome two years ago before the draft after he struck out 19 in a no-hitter.
