The Boston Red Sox may benefit from some dumb ol ‘luck on the free-agent market.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported in his column on Thursday that the Red Sox “appear to be looking” into making more signings and that they like veteran left-hander Jordan Montgomery in particular. Heyman adds that Montgomery’s wife McKenzie is a medical student in Boston.
Montgomery had indeed posted to his Instagram page in 2023 that McKenzie was matching for a dermatology residency program.
The 31-year-old Montgomery won the World Series last season with the Texas Rangers after he was acquired in a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline. Overall in 2023, Montgomery was 10-11 with a 3.20 ERA over 32 total starts. Along with Blake Snell, Montgomery stands as the best starting pitcher left on the free-agent market.
As for the Red Sox, they have been criticized for seemingly slashing payroll this offseason. But Boston did recently bolster their rotation by signing a former All-Star pitcher and may also have an unexpected advantage for another standout arm in Montgomery.
