45-year-old Rich Hill signs with his 14th MLB team

Rich Hill is not ready to give up on his MLB career just yet.

The Kansas City Royals announced Tuesday that they have signed Hill to a minor league contract, and the 45-year-old left-hander will report to their Triple-A affiliate in Omaha.

We have signed LHP Rich Hill to a minor league contract. He will report to Surprise and is expected to join Omaha (AAA) soon.

If Hill were to make an appearance for the Royals, they would be his 14th MLB team, which would tie the record set by Edwin Jackson during his 17-year career.

Hill had seemingly retired after the 2023 season, but he made a comeback last season with the Boston Red Sox. He was not terribly effective, allowing three walks and a hit in 3.2 innings, though he did strike out five batters. The team ultimately decided to let him go in September.

At this point in his career, Hill is a soft-tossing lefty, albeit one with tons of experience. He made his MLB debut in 2005, and has thrown 1,409 MLB innings during his career.

The Royals are 25-18 and sit second in the AL Central entering play Tuesday. If he can pitch his way onto their roster, Hill has a legitimate chance to contribute to a contender.
