Robinson Cano blames lack of hustle on scoreboard error

Robinson Cano

Robinson Cano declined to run out a double play ball during Friday’s game and is blaming a scoreboard error as the reason.

Cano went 1-for-5 in an 8-6 New York Mets loss at the Miami Marlins. Cano was up in the top of the seventh with one out, two on and his team down 7-3. He hit into a 6-4-3 double play that ended the inning and killed the Mets’ rally. The worst part is he didn’t run the grounder out to first.

Rather than blame his lack of hustle on laziness, Cano told his manager Mickey Callaway after the game that he didn’t run out the ball because he thought there were already two outs due to a scoreboard error.

Mickey on Cano: "“He came up proactively on his own and came up to me, the board said two outs, he thought there were two outs at the time, and he understands no matter what the board said, he needs to understand how many outs there are.”

It’s hard to say what’s worse: not knowing how many outs there were, not hustling, or blaming the mistake on the scoreboard. That’s a bad trio.

The high-priced second baseman has been a disappointment this season. He’s batting .255/.304/.389 for the 20-23 Mets. Cano’s lack of hustle has been a source of frustration for his coaches in the past.
