The Atlanta Braves are making some big moves to improve their bullpen.
The Braves on Tuesday added Chris Martin in a trade with the Texas Rangers. On Wednesday, they acquired Shane Greene from the Detroit Tigers just before the trade deadline, pending medicals, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.
Greene, 30, originally started for the Tigers after being acquired in a three-team deal before the 2015 season. He did not fare well in that role and was moved to the bullpen. He was shaky when he began as a reliever but has since settled in to perform well and was an All-Star this year.
Greene has 22 saves and a 1.18 ERA and 0.87 WHIP this season with 43 strikeouts in 38 innings.
The Braves needed the bullpen help. Luke Jackson has been struggling lately as their closer and was pulled after two batters in Wednesday’s game. He gave up three runs in an appearance the day before and has been charged with seven earned runs his last three times facing the Nationals. Anthony Swarzak has been pretty good for Atlanta but AJ Minter, another bullpen arm, has a 7.24 ERA.
