Stephen Strasburg’s injury reportedly not as bad as initially feared
The Washington Nationals found themselves six games out of first place in the NL East on the eve of the MLB trade deadline, but all indications have been that they do not intend to be sellers. The good news they got about Stephen Strasburg’s latest injury could have a lot to do with that.
Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports noted on Monday that the Nationals remain hopeful they can qualify for the postseason despite their 52-53 record. They also expect to get Strasburg back a lot sooner than they initially believed.
Strasburg also isn’t expected to be 6-8 weeks as first feared, and could much sooner. Has an inflamed nerve, but reports are positive. Recently got a shot to calm down area. #nats

Strasburg made just one start after returning from the disabled list, and he allowed allowed six runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. That was his worst outing of the season, and the right-hander immediately went back on the DL. However, his previous injury was described as shoulder inflammation, while the latest is a pinched nerve in his neck.
Strasburg received a shot to alleviate pain in his neck and shoulder area earlier this week, and the Nationals believe he can resume throwing soon. Either way, it does not sound like he’s in danger of being shut down for the season.
History would tell you that the Nationals’ chances of reaching the playoffs are not good, but general manager Mike Rizzo has made it clear he does not want to wave the white flag.
