Texas Rangers credited with run on bizarre, controversial play (Video)

Russell Martin play

The Texas Rangers were credited with a run on a bizarre, controversial play in the seventh inning of Wednesday’s decisive ALDS Game 5 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Shin Soo Choo was batting with two outs and Rougned Odor on third in the top of the seventh. The count was 1-2 and Choo took a pitch for a ball. Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin then attempted to throw the ball back to pitcher Aaron Sanchez, but the ball hit off Choo’s bat and redirected towards third base.

An alert Odor broke for home and scored.

The confusion occurred when umpire Dale Scott waved off the play as if time was out, which would have prevented a runner from advancing. Upon a review, the Rangers were credited with the run, giving them a 3-2 lead.

Blue Jays fans were furious with the call and began throwing food and other objects on the field in protest.

Russell Martin was officially given a throwing error on the odd play.
