Report: Twins have no plans to extend Brian Dozier
Brian Dozier has been one of the most consistent hitters in the Minnesota Twins’ lineup over the past two years, but the team still has no plans to keep him beyond the 2018 season.
According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Twins are not planning to offer Dozier a contract extension and will instead make a qualifying offer. The report is consistent with what Dozier said in an interview with the Star Tribune recently.
“I don’t want to touch too much on this, it’s the thing that gets asked all the time, but at the same time, I will be a free agent this fall,” he said. “That’s the bottom line. You can only say you want to be here so much, and nothing gets done.
“That’s just the way it is. I understand everything. At the same time, you’re six months away from free agency. That’s intriguing.”
Dozier has hit 76 homers and driven in 192 runs over the past two seasons. The Twins obviously feel that the 30-year-old has priced his way out of town, otherwise they would have at least explored the possibility of signing him to an extension.
The Twins could still try to move Dozier before the trade deadline this summer, but the asking price would have to come way down from where it was last year.
