Video: Phil Nevin gets emotional talking about missing son’s MLB debut

Phil Nevin

Phil Nevin got emotional talking about missing his son’s MLB debut.

Nevin’s son, Tyler, played two games for the Baltimore Orioles this season before being sent back down to the minors. He went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk on May 29 and then 0-for-3 the following day before being sent back down the following day.

Phil Nevin is the third base coach for the New York Yankees but tested positive for COVID-19 despite being vaccinated, the team announced on May 11. He lost 22 pounds while being out with COVID because he had a bacterial infection.

Nevin only returned to the Yankees on Friday. He talked about what it was like to miss Tyler’s MLB debut in person and got very emotional.

“Not be there for that, it’s something you’ll never get back,” Nevin said Friday. “But, you know, I couldn’t be prouder of him. We talked, when he got called up and right before he went out to the field, and it was still a special moment without a doubt.”

Nevin is still receiving some treatments to improve his condition. But he at least is already feeling better and well enough to be around the team. And at least he has another son whose MLB debut he is hoping to one day attend.
