A former Philadelphia Phillies infielder had a great message for the team’s fans Tuesday as he officially announced his retirement.

Whit Merrifield said in a statement Tuesday that he has officially retired from Major League Baseball. The three-time All-Star is best remembered for his time with the Kansas City Royals and Toronto Blue Jays, but spent part of the back end of his career with the Phillies.

In a message to fans, Merrifield acknowledged all of the teams he played for, even the Phillies. That portion, however, was easily the most memorable.

“Philly, I liked you way more than you liked me. Sorry I stunk for you,” Merrifield wrote.

Congratulations on an amazing run @WhitMerrifield. We’re beyond grateful to have been a part of the journey every step of the way.#TeamWSM pic.twitter.com/MW6zgsxnXJ

Merrifield signed a one-year, $8 million contract with Philadelphia prior to the 2024 season. He wound up playing 53 games with the team, where he hit .199 with three home runs. The Phillies ultimately released him in July, and he was largely remembered as a pricey bust in Philadelphia.

At least Merrifield has a sense of humor about his unsuccessful stint in Philadelphia and does not hold his unpopularity against the fans. Some others have not been quite as charitable with them.
