The New York Yankees’ wallets will be feeling a lot lighter after shelling $86 million to bring back All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman. Now they may be looking to cut costs elsewhere.
According to a report by Joel Sherman of the New York Post on Tuesday, the Yankees are gauging interest in a pair of veterans, outfielder Brett Gardner and third baseman Chase Headley, “as a way to cut a significant salary.”
Gardner is owed $25 million over the next two years with Headley being owed $26 million over the next two. The former provides speed and defense, while the latter is also a plus defender and brings some power to the table as well.

The Yankees have already sent one veteran on the wrong side of 30 packing this offseason, so perhaps they’ll look to continue that trend as we move closer to spring training.
