Yankees not concerned about Dellin Betances’ low velocity
New York Yankees reliever Dellin Betances was only barely touching 90 MPH in his spring debut, but the team sees no cause for concern yet.
Betances was between 88 and 91 on the radar gun, but manager Aaron Boone said the reliever is just building up arm strength and is not worried about any potential issues.
Something to watch tonight: Dellin Betances' velocity. He was between 88 and 91 mph in his spring debut.
Boone: "I'm not overly concerned with the other day, other than it caught me off guard a little bit. I think he feels fine. I think it's a matter of building arm strength."

Betances’ fastball averaged 97.8 MPH last season, so he’s obviously well off his usual pace. However, it could be that he needs time to get into regular season form, and he still has a few weeks to do so. He’ll have to if the Yankees are going to consider using him as an opener, which they may.
