Ex-76ers player calls out team for lowballing him

One former Philadephia 76ers player is not too happy with the way that the team did business this summer.

Veteran NBA forward Guerschon Yabusele agreed to a free agent deal earlier this week with the New York Knicks. He spent last season with the 76ers but apparently got lowballed by the team in negotiations this offseason.

“They almost didn’t make really like an offer,” said Yabusele of the 76ers during an interview with European outlet SKWEEK. “They did, but it was really, really low.

“I felt like, ‘Oh my god, you guys, seems like you really don’t want me to stay,” Yabusele added. “But no hard feeling[s]. I’m always thankful for them. They gave me my second chance [in the NBA].”

Here is the full video of Yabusele’s remarks.

Yabusele, 29, was a steady contributor last season for the 76ers. With the team facing injuries to their stars Paul George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey, Yabusele stepped up and carved out a key role. He averaged 11.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists in 27.1 minutes per game for Philly, also playing and defending multiple positions.

But apparently, the 76ers were not willing to pay up in order to keep Yabusele. Seeing as he ultimately got a modest two-year, $12 million contract with the Knicks, the offer that the 76ers gave to Yabusele must have been really tiny.

Philadelphia finished a woeful 13th in the Eastern Conference last season at 24-58. They also owe the George-Embiid-Maxey trio a combined $145 million next season and a combined $154 million in 2026-27.

But even so, it looked like Yabusele had served as valuable-enough role player to earn a second contract from the 76ers. In the end though, that wasn’t the case, and now Yabusele will continue his redemption story (which began at the 2024 Paris Olympics) elsewhere in the division with the Knicks.
