Markannen injured his elbow in practice on Thursday and an MRI revealed a lateral sprain, as the team said on Twitter.
The 21-year-old was the No. 7 overall pick in the 2017 draft out of Arizona and was sent to Chicago as part of the Jimmy Butler deal. Markkanen had a promising rookie season, averaging 15.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
Markkanen worked hard to pack on muscle during the offseason and was eager to showcase his abilities this season. Now his season debut will be delayed.
