Cavaliers get roasted on social media after missing out on LeBron James

A lot of the public rumors surrounding LeBron James suggested a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers was one of the likeliest scenarios in free agency. When that did not happen, social media had a field day.

The Cavs were the subject of some quality jokes on social media after James instead opted to join the Philadelphia 76ers. One particularly brutal one joked that the Cavaliers “analytically” landed James, a reference to coach Kenny Atkinson’s infamous quote about how his team was beating the New York Knicks analytically despite being down 3-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Other comments focused on how the Cavaliers had seemingly fumbled their offseason while waiting on James’ decision. Second-round pick Maleek Thomas is the only player they have added this offseason, and with James heading elsewhere, there is a real worry that Cleveland is set to fall behind in a loaded Eastern Conference.

The sell for Cavaliers fans was “at least LeBron is coming, and we can ride the retirement tour into the sunset”

What is it now?

“Hey guys, remember The Swept? We’re running that back. Jaylon Tyson got better!”

The biggest loser after the LeBron fallout is easily the Cleveland Cavaliers.

They lost Dean Wade and Keon Ellis and have only added a rookie in Meleek Thomas. They clearly have gotten worse. What is the plan?

While the Cavaliers will bring back James Harden at some point, it does feel like they put all their eggs in the James basket and came up empty. The team does have a backup plan, but it is not one that compares with James or excites the fanbase too much.

The Cavaliers won 64 games in 2024-25, but fell in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. They made it to the Eastern Conference Finals last season, but won fewer games overall and were swept by the Knicks in brutal fashion. The trend does not appear to be their friend at this point, and Cavs fans are understandably a bit worried about where the team will go from here.
