Celtics trade Aron Baynes, Ty Jerome to Suns to clear salary cap space

Aron Baynes

The Boston Celtics may be losing Kyrie Irving, Al Horford and missed out on Anthony Davis, but apparently they’re making plans for other free agents this summer.

The Celtics made a move with the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night to clear some salary cap space. They traded the No. 24 pick in the draft and center Aron Baynes to the Suns for a future first-round pick.

Baynes is set to make $5.4 million next season after opting in to his contract. They also had a cap hold for the No. 24 pick that frees up additional space. They selected Ty Jerome with the pick, who will go to Phoenix.

Not only do the Celtics project to have as much as $35 million in cap space this summer if they don’t keep Terry Rozier, but they also are getting a future draft pick — the 2020 protected Milwaukee first-round pick that Phoenix held from the Eric Bledsoe trade. Based on how good Milwaukee will likely be next season, that pick projects to be a late first-rounder next year.
