D’Angelo Russell humbled after Lakers benching

Earlier this week, Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick heaped praise on point guard D’Angelo Russell, calling him one of the team’s “vocal leaders.” But during a 131-114 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night, it was Russell who made Redick completely lose his cool.

With just over 6:00 remaining in the third quarter, Russell attempted to shake the Grizzlies defense before putting up an off-balance three-pointer that was blocked by Jay Huff. Redick was infuriated by the shot selection and cameras caught him slamming his chair on the sideline.

Russell was benched and criticized by Redick, who went on to say the benching “wasn’t punishment” and it wasn’t permanent.

“Level of compete. Attention to detail. Some of the things we’ve talked with him about a couple of weeks. At times he’s been really good, other times it’s just reverting to certain habits,” Redick said on Wednesday, via Daniel Starkand. “It wasn’t like a punishment, but for us to have a chance to win this game, that was the route we wanted to take.”

On Friday night against the Philadelphia 76ers, Russell did not return to the starting lineup. He played 25 minutes off the bench and sounded humble following the 116-106 victory and at peace with Redick’s decision.

“I just wanted to win,” Russell said, via ESPN. “So whatever it took, change of plans, whatever it is, whatever Coach needs, try to get the win and be a part of that.”

Cam Reddish drew the start in place of Russell, who again earned praise from Redick after providing a spark off the bench with 18 points and three assists.

“Big-time pop for us off the bench,” Redick said. “A really efficient night for him. And he just played really good basketball.”

Redick stopped short of saying Russell would return to the starting lineup but did say the situation is “fluid.” Either way, Russell seems content and willing to do whatever the Lakers need. At least for now.
