Darren Collison announces surprising retirement from NBA

Darren Collison

Darren Collison announced his surprising retirement from the NBA on Friday night.

Collison wrote a first person piece for The Undefeated in which he announced his decision. The biggest reason for his decision seems to be his desire to do more with helping others.

“While I still love basketball, I know there is something more important, which is my family and my faith. I am one of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and my faith means everything to me. I receive so much joy from volunteering to help others and participate in a worldwide ministry. The joy I feel is unmatched,” Collison wrote. “I have always felt the need to do more to help others; that’s why it is so important to try and help out as much as possible.”

Collison, 31, averaged 11.2 points, 6.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game last season, his second with the Pacers. He is a career 39.4 percent 3-point shooter and led the league with a 46.8 3-point percentage two seasons ago.

Collison was expected to have a strong market of suitors this summer and will retire leaving millions of free agency dollars on the table.
