Dominique Wilkins gets roasted for terrible first pick in all-time draft

Dominique Wilkins got to play GM at NBA All-Star Weekend this year. But instead of looking like Jerry Krause, he ended up looking like Dion Waiters.

TNT aired a special Saturday where several famous figures, from the NBA world and otherwise, competed against each other to draft the best NBA team of all-time. The pool of available players were the 75 selected as the greatest ever for the league’s 75th anniversary. Wilkins participated with Jerry West, Sue Bird, DL Hughley, Quavo, the two “NBA on TNT” crews, and a team of reporters Shams Charania and Chris Haynes for a total of eight teams.

Wilkins landed the first pick in the draft. But instead of selecting Michael Jordan, LeBron James, or Kobe Bryant, Wilkins went with … himself. The unexpected move led to Wilkins getting roasted on the broadcast.

Bryant, Jordan, and James were then selected (in that order) after Wilkins drafted himself first overall.

Wilkins was a nine-time All-Star in the NBA who also won a scoring title and was one of the game’s most thunderous dunkers ever. But there is only one person who believes Wilkins deserves to go No. 1 overall in an all-time draft — Wilkins himself. Even if Wilkins wanted to make sure he got a spot on his own team, he probably would have still be on the board much later.

You definitely cannot knock Wilkins’ confidence in himself though. It was likely safe to assume too that Wilkins was not going to draft one of today’s stars first overall considering the comments that he has made in the past.
