Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union on Tuesday shared with the world that they have a new daughter — Zaya.
Wade went on “Ellen” Tuesday, and Union posted a video on Twitter, to share that their 12-year-old child Zaya is now going by female pronouns and wants to be referred to as “she” and “her.”
Wade talked about his role as a father in supporting his child.

Zaya was born a boy and originally named Zion at birth but recognized that she was part of the LGBTQ+ community and did not identify as a boy. Wade and Union have been active in the LGBTQ+ community ever since, providing support to Zaya as she became more comfortable with her true self. In April last year, they supported Zaya at a pride parade. Zaya still went by Zion then, but has now changed.
In the video posted by Union, Zaya talks about finding her true self. It’s hard not to have respect for someone who sounds so wise and knows who they are at such a young age.
Meet Zaya. She's compassionate, loving, whip smart and we are so proud of her. It’s Ok to listen to, love & respect your children exactly as they are. Love and light good people. pic.twitter.com/G2lLVdD2VT

Wade, who played 17 seasons in the NBA, has four children and raises her sister’s son, Dahveon Morris. Zaya is one of two children Wade shares with his ex-wife Siohvaughn (Zaire is the other).
