Frank Vogel spotted around top NBA contender
Frank Vogel may be getting his feet wet for another round as an NBA coach.
Veteran NBA writer Marc Stein reported on Tuesday that the former Phoenix Suns head coach Vogel was spotted at training camp for the Dallas Mavericks in Las Vegas, Nev. this week. Stein notes that Vogel was a special guest of Mavs head coach Jason Kidd.
Vogel, who was fired by the Suns in May after just one season in charge and replaced by Mike Budenholzer, has some history with Kidd. From 2019-21, Kidd served as an assistant on Vogel’s coaching staff (Vogel was head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers at the time). The two helped lead the Lakers to the NBA title in 2020.
NBA teams have mostly finalized their coaching staffs already for next season, so it appears unlikely that Vogel will land an official role as an assistant. But Vogel is still only 51 years old and had interest from other major NBA teams before taking the Suns job. He would indeed be wise to stay close to the game, even if he does end up taking a gap year in 2024-25.
