Jeff Van Gundy reportedly ‘gaining momentum’ as Rockets preferred choice; Kenny Smith not a candidate
It sounds like the Houston Rockets are closing in on a coaching decision.
CBS Sports’s Ken Berger reported Monday that Jeff Van Gundy is “gaining momentum” as Houston’s first choice, with the Rockets preferring an experienced hire. The biggest question is whether he’s interested in leaving his job with ESPN to return to the Rockets, the team he coached from 2003 to 2007.
One person who was interviewed but isn’t a serious candidate is TNT analyst Kenny Smith, though he apparently did well in his interview.
Rockets coaching search focused on former head coaches, very experienced assts, per source. Kenny Smith impressed, but told not in running.

Van Gundy sounds like he’s the clear frontrunner, and the process appears to be moving toward a conclusion. Frank Vogel and Jeff Hornacek were said to be on the Rockets’ radar as well.
