Beloved longtime Portland Trail Blazers forward Jerome Kersey died Wednesday because of a blood clot that broke, medical officials announced Thursday.
Dr. Larry Lewman of the Oregon state medical examiner’s office shared the news with The Oregonian and says a blood clot from Kersey’s left calf broke loose, traveled to his lungs and clogged his pulmonary arteries, causing him to die.
Lewman speculates that the blood clot could be the result of post-surgery complications. Kersey had surgery Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. Whether or not the clot was formed as a result of the surgery will be determined after they do more examining.
Kersey was 52. His death came as a huge shock because only a day earlier he was doing work in the community.
