Joey Buss makes rare appearance repping Lakers at IST trophy ceremony

Joey Buss giving an interview

Joey Buss finally got a speaking part for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Joey, an alternate governor for the Lakers, made a very rare appearance on Saturday representing the team after they won the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament with a 123-109 victory over the Indiana Pacers. He spoke on the behalf of ownership as the team accepted their trophy.

Joey called the win an “amazing” feeling and thanked the fans, players, and coaches as well as “Jeanie and the rest of my family” before ending his mini-speech with an enthusiastic “Let’s go Lakers!”

You can see Joey’s full appearance starting at the 1:40 mark below.

One of seven children of the late Dr. Jerry Buss, Joey officially serves as vice president of research and development for the Lakers. His half-sibling Jeanie is the face of the Lakers as their controlling owner and governor. Many of Joey’s other siblings, including Jesse (current assistant GM and scouting director) and Jim (former executive vice president of basketball operations) are well-known members of the family ownership trust as well.

Granted, Joey almost never makes public appearances on behalf of the team. But he appears to be working his way up in the family hierarchy, which has had a lot of moving parts over the years.
