Khris Middleton is returning to his former team — but it’s not the Milwaukee Bucks.
The 3-time All-Star is reportedly signing a 3-year, $17.6 million contract with the Washington Wizards. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the deal will be facilitated via a sign-and-trade with the Dallas Mavericks.
Per Charania’s reporting, the Middleton deal is part of a six-team deal that combines previously agreed-upon transactions. Washington is sending D’Angelo Russell, a second-round pick, and a second-round pick swap to the Memphis Grizzlies in the exchange.
Dallas is sending Middleton to the Wizards via sign-and-trade as part of a larger six-team deal that includes, in total, the Mavericks, Wizards, Clippers, Pistons, Bucks and Grizzlies. The 34-year-old Middleton joins a Wizards team that definitely understands the value of his veteran presence. Washington acquired Middleton two seasons ago in the trade that sent Kyle Kuzma to Milwaukee.
For parts of two seasons, Middleton provided leadership on a Wizards team that was playing more for lottery balls than wins. He was then included in the trade that brought Anthony Davis to D.C.
Middleton now joins a Wizards squad that finally looks ready to compete for a playoff spot. Washington added AJ Dybantsa to a young core of Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, and last year’s No. 6 pick Tre Johnson. The team also made moves to acquire both Davis and Trae Young before last season’s trade deadline.
Despite injuries sapping Middleton of some of his athleticism at this stage in his career, the 15-year veteran has remained productive on the court. Last season, he averaged 10.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists across 63 games.
