The Los Angeles Lakers are doing everything they can to build a competitive roster after their disappointing season, and LeBron James is so happy about it that he’s willing to give up his jersey number.
According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, LeBron has decided to gift his No. 23 jersey to Anthony Davis, who has worn that number throughout his entire seven-year NBA career. Haynes notes that Davis was “extremely grateful of the gesture,” and the belief is that James is trying to make Davis as comfortable as possible with his new team.
Davis is set to become a free agent after the season, and it makes sense for LeBron to do everything he can to convince him to re-sign. The number could hold more significance to Davis than it does to James, as LeBron wore No. 6 during his time with the Miami Heat.
Word of LeBron’s kind gesture surfaced around the same time it was reported that the Lakers have freed up enough salary cap space for a third max contract player thanks in part to Davis making a sacrifice. The good vibes are flowing in LA this summer.
