NBA experimenting with micro transactions in app

The NBA is experimenting with a new method of providing content to fans through its app.

League Pass is the NBA’s service that provides fans the ability to watch out-of-market games. Fans can purchase single games, games for all teams, and a there is a premium offering that includes in-arena streams and virtual reality for select games. A single game can be purchased for $6.99.

But now, the league is adding another option.

As one astute Twitter user pointed out, the league is offering micro transactions, such as the ability to watch the fourth quarter of games for $0.99.

During this year’s Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, NBA Senior VP of Customer Data Strategy Doris Daif spoke about the role of analytics in understanding how customers spend their money on entertainment. Daif discussed using it to better market the league to consumers, according to Forbes.

The new offering from the NBA is another example of how the league continues to evolve and innovate under commissioner Adam Silver. While many fans may not have the money to buy the full league pass or even a full game, they might not flinch at spending less than a dollar to watch the fourth quarter of an exciting game.

Whether we see the new option beyond this season will likely depend on how it is received over the remainder of this season. Our early belief is that it’s a great idea.
