NBA Trade Deadline Recap and Analysis

The trade deadline is always one of the busiest times of year in the NBA. Players are swapped, contracts are dumped, and deals are made. We have you covered with a recap of every single trade made during the week, along with some analysis for what the moves mean for every single NBA team. For more, follow LBSports on twitter. Here’s your NBA trade deadline recap and analysis:

Atlanta Hawks
– Acquired Kirk Hinrich and Hilton Armstrong from Washington for Mike Bibby, Jordan Crawford, Mo Evans and a first-round pick
Analysis: The Hawks are trying to add another shooter to their guard rotation as they prepare for the playoffs.

Boston Celtics
– Acquired Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic from Oklahoma City for Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson
– Traded Marquis Daniels to Sacramento for cash
– Traded Semih Erdan and Luke Harangody to Cleveland for a second-round pick
Analysis: The Celtics made a surprise move by trading away Kendrick Perkins who was recovering from knee surgery. Perkins has been able to body up Dwight Howard and the Lakers’ big men in the playoffs, so losing him is a gamble. The Celtics will roll with Krstic, and Shaq in their frontcourt and are taking a risk. Jeff Green should back up Paul Pierce, unless they move KG to the five and play both players in a small lineup.

Charlotte Bobcats
– Traded Gerald Williams and Sean Marks to Portland for Joel Przybilla, Dante Cunningham and two first-round picks
– Traded Nazr Mohammed to Oklahoma City for D.J. White and Mo Peterson
Analysis: This is a salary dump for Charlotte. They’re getting rid of the two years and $21 million Wallace has left on the four-year deal he signed with the Bobcats for the expiring contract of Przybilla.

Chicago Bulls
– Traded James Johnson to Toronto for a first-round pick (Miami’s which was acquired in the Bosh deal)
Analysis: Not much to see here. This will be a late pick because we are expecting Miami to make a deep playoff run.

Cleveland Cavaliers
– Acquired Baron Davis from Clippers for Mo Williams, Jamario Moon, and a first-round pick
– Acquired Semih Erdan and Luke Harangody for a second-round pick
Analysis: The Cavs are trying to make a move that will improve their team and possibly give their fans hope. Instead, they could wind up with an unhappy Baron Davis who won’t be excited about joining the worst team in the league. They’ll owe him $29 million over the next two years.

Denver Nuggets
– Traded Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Anthony Carter, Renaldo Balkman, and Shelden Williams to New York for Wilson Chandler, Timofey Mozgov, Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, a 2014 first-round pick, second round picks in 2012 and 2013, and cash
– Acquired Kosta Koufos from Minnesota
Analysis: They knew Carmelo wanted out and that he wouldn’t sign an extension with them, so he forced their hand. They made the most of the situation, getting back a good package of players and picks that can help them form a decent team. Still, by losing their franchise player, they lost the trade. There wasn’t much more they could have done.

Houston Rockets
– Traded Aaron Brooks to Phoenix for Goran Dragic and a first-round pick
– Traded Shane Battier to Memphis for Hasheem Thabeet and a first-round pick
Analysis: Brooks had wanted out, so they finally got rid of him and brought in Dragic who will finally have a chance to start. They’re also taking on the Thabeet project and will give him a chance to play, while Chase Budinger should fill Battier’s hole in the lineup. The good news with Thabeet is he has a team option after the season that Houston does not have to pick up.

Los Angeles Clippers
– Traded Baron Davis to Cleveland for Mo Williams, Jamario Moon, and a first-round pick
Analysis: The Clippers finally get out of the horrible contract to which they signed Baron, something nobody thought they could have done. Mo is making $8.5 million next season and has a player option the year after that. He should fit in perfectly throwing alley-oops to Blake Griffin. Moon is only on the hook for $3 million next season, so the Clippers did quite well to rid themselves of Baron’s deal. Eric Bledsoe should split action at the point with Williams.

Memphis Grizzlies
– Acquired Shane Battier from Houston for Hasheem Thabeet and a first-round pick
Analysis: The Grizzlies acquire a nice glue guy and locker room favorite who can help the Grizzlies hold onto the final playoff spot in the West. They’re giving up on Thabeet who was a reach as the second overall pick in 2009.

Minnesota Timberwolves
– Acquired Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry from New York for Corey Brewer
– Traded Kosta Koufos to Denver
Analysis: A good move for Minnesota in acquiring the expiring contract of Curry and Randolph for draft bust Brewer. Randolph has talent but couldn’t get any playing time in New York. He showed some skills in Golden State, so maybe he’ll have a chance to do the same for the T-Wolves. Nice pickup by Kahn.

New Jersey Nets
– Acquired Deron Williams from Utah for Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, two first-round picks, and cash
– Traded Troy Murphy to Golden State for Brandan Wright, Dan Gadzuric, and a second-round pick
Analysis: They still may lose Deron Williams to free agency in the summer of 2012, but for now they have a legitimate All-Star on their roster, something they seriously lacked. Plus, having Williams might help them recruit other players in free agency. Even if they lose Williams in a year and a half, it was worth the gamble; they’re not going anywhere with Harris and Favors anyway.

New Orleans Hornets
– Acquired Carl Landry from Sacramento for Marcus Thornton and cash
Analysis: The Hornets are in the middle of the Western Conference playoff pack and solidify their front court even further with Landry. He hasn’t done much with Sacramento, but he’s a solid rebounder and should give them scoring off the bench. The salary addition upset some NBA execs given that the Hornets are league-owned, but this was a good move for them.

New York Knicks
– Acquired Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter, and Renaldo Balkman from Denver for Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, and Timofey Mozgov, second-round picks in 2012 and 2013, and a first-round pick in 2014
– Acquired Corey Brewer from Minnesota for Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry
Analysis: Some people feel like the Knicks gave up too much to acquire Melo, but don’t forget they also got Chauncey Billups who’s a playoff veteran. The Knicks now have two legitimate stars and have an opportunity to pursue a third in free agency in 2012 — perhaps Williams or Chris Paul. They’ve done a nice job upgrading their team to contender status.

Oklahoma City Thunder
– Acquired Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson from Boston for Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic
– Acquired Nazr Mohammed for D.J. White and Mo Peterson
Analysis: The Thunder have been desperate to improve their bigs, and they’ve done that with Perkins. He’s been fine since returning from knee surgery and should help the Thunder’s ability to match up with the Lakers in the playoffs. Green is a good scorer, but OKC has enough of that with Durant and Westbrook. Trading him enables them to go bigger.

Phoenix Suns
– Acquired Aaron Brooks from Houston for Goran Dragic and a first-round pick
Analysis: Brooks is a nice player and had a breakout season last year, but he’s been having a tough time in Houston. Things won’t get much better in Phoenix where he’ll be backing up Steve Nash. This feels like a minor upgrade for the Suns.

Portland Trailblazers
– Acquired Gerald Williams and Sean Marks from Charlotte for Joel Przybilla, Dante Cunningham, and two first-round picks
Analysis: Portland is picking up salary in acquiring a player they hope will improve their team for a playoff run. Wallace is a good rebounder and scorer and should help take the load off LaMarcus Aldridge. The Blazers also managed to hang onto Marcus Camby through the deadline though they’re losing size in Przybilla.

Sacramento Kings
– Traded Carl Landry to New Orleans for Marcus Thornton and cash
– Acquired Marquis Daniels from Boston for cash
Analysis: Their season was over before it began, so it’s not like they did much. They have bigger things to worry about, like where they’re going to play in the future.

Utah Jazz
– Traded Deron Williams to New Jersey for Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, two first-round picks, and cash
Analysis: Pulled off a shocker with a move that came out of nowhere. They’ve lost their coach and best player and are slipping out of the playoff race. It will likely be five years before they’re competitive in the Western Conference again. They better hope they can draft really really well otherwise they’re toast. Sorry Jazz fans.

Washington Wizards
– Traded Kirk Hinrich and Hilton Armstrong to Atlanta for Mike Bibby, Jordan Crawford, Mo Evans and a first-round pick
Analysis: Hinrich was due to make $8 million next season, so it’s nice for the Wizards to rid themselves of that contract. They also picked up some extra depth in the process, though Bibby may ask to be bought out which is nice since he’s not worth the $6.2 million he’ll make next season.
