Nico Harrison’s plans for the future are revealed

Nico Harrison is about to take it easy after getting shown the door.

The fired former Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison plans to take some time away from basketball in order to focus on his family, veteran NBA writer Chris Haynes reported this week during an appearance on NBA TV. Haynes did note though that Harrison is in “good spirits” despite his firing.

“He’s in good spirits, man,” Haynes said of Harrison, per Bleacher Report. “He’s going to take some time to be with himself and his family and just get away from everything. It’s been a tough situation.”

Harrison, 52, had been the general manager of the Mavericks since 2021. But he irreparably cratered his reputation by orchestrating the team’s disastrous trade of franchise player Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this year. As a result, Harrison immediately became public enemy No. 1 in Dallas with “Fire Nico!” chants ringing out at every turn ever since the trade was made. Mavericks leadership ultimately listened to that advice as well and canned Harrison just over nine months after the Doncic trade.

Earlier this week, we heard that ex-Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban played a part in getting Harrison fired. Meanwhile, Harrison has since made a notable change to his social media pages ever since losing his job.

It is unclear if Harrison, the former Nike executive, will ever get another job in the NBA as he will forever be associated with one of the most indefensible mistakes in sports history. But at least for now, Harrison is happy to take some time to decompress away from the spotlight amid all the hatred that he had received for the Doncic trade.
