Ray Allen still eyeing NBA comeback, has spoken with Celtics and Bucks

Ray-Allen

Ray Allen is still interested in playing in the NBA next season, and the 41-year-old says the perception that he would only want to join the Golden State Warriors or Cleveland Cavaliers is wrong.

In an interview with Dom Amore the Hartford Courant, Allen reiterated that he would not return to the NBA after two seasons off to play for a team that is in rebuilding mode.

“My decision is predicated on what is available,” Allen said. “I said that I was interested because I never retired for a reason. I’ve been watching, seeing what teams have been doing and I’ve been waiting to see if the opportunity presented itself where I think I could fit.”

While a previous report indicated that Allen has reached out to the two aforementioned teams and possibly one other, the two-time champion said he would also be open to returning to either the Boston Celtics or Milwaukee Bucks.

“I would love going back to those places if it worked out, because both teams are good, too,” Allen said. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be championship-or-bust for me to go back to the NBA. I want to be in a situation where I thought I could help, play a little bit and help where they have good young talent.”

While he acknowledges he was a “little winded” after a recent workout, Allen is known for staying in great shape even at his age. He added that he would rather join a team before the start of training camp than in the middle of the season. If no opportunity arises this summer, Allen is prepared to retire.

Considering the reaction after the Warriors signed one veteran for cheap money already, we know how teams would feel about Allen heading to Golden State. But if he has an opportunity to chase a third ring as a role player, Allen is clearly interested.
