Big changes could be coming to the Orlando Magic front office this offseason.
According to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel, many NBA insiders expect the Magic to fire general manager Rob Hennigan after the season.
Hennigan, who took over the position for Otis Smith in 2012, is the youngest GM in the league at 34 years old. But his inexperience has often shown with the personnel moves he has made in recent seasons. In the last two years alone, Hennigan traded decent rotation players in Maurice Harkless and Kyle O’Quinn for virtually nothing, dealt Tobias Harris for a few months of Brandon Jennings and Ersan Ilyasova, drafted Mario Hezonja over the likes of Devin Booker and Myles Turner, and swung the ill-fated trade of Ilyasova, Victor Oladipo and the rights to Domantas Sabonis for half a season of Serge Ibaka before flipping Ibaka for Terrence Ross and a low first-rounder.
As a result, the Magic are 24-41 on the season (13th in the Eastern Conference) and are on the verge of clinching their fifth consecutive losing season since Hennigan became the general manager. A new head coach in Frank Vogel hasn’t been the answer, and neither has playing some of their other young players out of position in order to accommodate Hennigan’s roster construction. As such, it may very well be time for the Magic to take some drastic measures and shake up their front office.
