The Sacramento Kings may have a favorite already for their head coach job.
The Kings’ season came to an end on Wednesday night with a 120-106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks at home in their 9-10 play-in game. Immediately after the game, a report emerged saying the Kings had fired Monte McNair as their general manager. They are hiring Scott Perry to fill that position. The Kings also have a decision to make regarding their head coach job.
Sacramento in December fired Mike Brown as their head coach following a 13-18 start to the season. He was replaced by Doug Christie, who went 27-24 as the team’s interim head coach.
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Christie is “well-positioned to keep the job.”
Christie has tons of history with the Kings. He played with the team for five seasons from 2000-2005. He made the NBA’s All-Defensive team four times during his Kings career.
Christie joined the Kings’ coaching staff as an assistant coach in 2021 and was in his fourth season as an assistant coach before becoming the interim head coach.
Considering the Kings’ hire of Perry, retaining Christie would seem to fit the Kings’ mentality. Perry served as the Kings’ vice president of basketball operations in 2017.
