Report: ‘Slight chance’ Isaiah Thomas could miss most of season

Isaiah Thomas

The Cleveland Cavaliers have seemingly gotten cold feet in accepting a trade that would see them swap All-Star point guards with the Boston Celtics, leading many to wonder if the hip injury Isaiah Thomas is dealing with is worse than initially believed. If so, how bad are we talking?

ESPN’s Zach Lowe says he was told by sources that there is a “slight chance” Thomas could miss most of the 2017-18 season if his recovery does not proceed smoothly. Thomas has opted to not undergo surgery, and it’s possible the Cavs think he needs it. That would, in theory, keep the 28-year-old out a lot longer.

All indications have been that the Celtics were forthcoming with the Cavs when working out the Kyrie Irving trade. Even Danny Ainge admitted that Thomas could possibly miss the start of next season, so it’s unlikely that Boston was hiding anything.

On Tuesday, Thomas insisted his hip is fine and made some strong comments about the speculation swirling around him. For what it’s worth, his contract is up at the end of the season and he will be seeking a max deal. Missing significant time during the regular season would be bad news for Thomas.
