Troubling injury news emerges about Anthony Davis

Anthony Davis isn’t even waiting until the start of the new season to spark concerns about his health once again.

The Dallas Mavericks big man Davis could potentially miss the start of the 2025-26 campaign while he recovers from offseason eye surgery. Veteran NBA writer Marc Stein made the troubling revelation during an appearance this week on the “DLLS Dallas Mavericks Podcast.”

“Based on everything that I’m told, he’s not fully back on the court yet,” said Stein of Davis. “He can’t be fully back on the court yet … When [training camp] practices start on September 30th, will AD even be ready to practice at that point? We don’t know that yet.”

“Is AD gonna be ready to go on Opening Night?” Stein continued. “October 22nd ain’t that far away. There’s so many questions.”

We learned in July that the 10-time All-Star Davis, now 32 years old, had undergone surgery to address a detached retina in his eye. He was hit in the face multiple times during the season (with one particularly ugly hit occurring in April) and played through the ailment for the rest of the year.

Davis has long been known as an injury-prone player and has missed 25 or more games in four of the last five seasons. During the 2024-25 campaign, Davis made just 51 combined appearances between the Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers and even got injured during his debut game for Dallas.

The Mavericks will already be without fellow star Kyrie Irving (ACL recovery) for perhaps all of next season. Now Davis is adding his own cause for concern before the start of training camp in late September.
