Wizards’ plan for Anthony Davis after blockbuster trade is revealed

The Washington Wizards are not taking any chances with new All-Star acquisition Anthony Davis.

The Wizards are reportedly expected to shut Davis down for the rest of the season due to his hand and groin injuries. According to NBA reporter Chris Haynes, the team intends to sit him in order to get him healthy for the 2026-27 campaign.

The news comes as no surprise, considering the Wizards are already pulling a similar move with fellow reclamation project Trae Young. Washington has every incentive to tank for the remainder of the year, with its first-round pick this coming draft being top-8 protected.

The only way to guarantee that the pick doesn’t convey to the New York Knicks is by finishing with one of the four worst records in the NBA at season’s end. The Wizards currently have the fifth-worst record in the league through Friday’s slate of games.

The Wizards gave up a meager package to acquire Davis at the trade deadline. If they can keep Davis in bubble wrap until next season, Washington could potentially rebuild the 10-time All-Star’s trade value to flip him again at next year’s deadline — far from a guarantee given Davis’ checkered injury history.

The best-case scenario for Washington is that Davis stays healthy and clicks with a young core. The fivesome of Davis, Young, Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, and Tre Johnson could make some noise in a shallow East next season, especially if the Wizards win a top-4 pick in a loaded 2026 NBA Draft.
