Carlos Sainz wins Mexico Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz won the Mexican Grand Prix Sunday, making it back-to-back weekends where Ferrari has been able to secure the top spot in F1.
Despite losing P1 to Max Verstappen on the opening lap, Sainz was able to regain his spot after the safety car returned to the pit. Battling behind him were Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, and Verstappen. In a turn of events from the previous week, Verstappen was assessed two 10-second penalties for unsafe maneuvering, which removed him from podium contention and resulted in him finishing sixth.
Although Leclerc was firmly entrenched in second place throughout the race, Norris was able to battle back and steal second place after Leclerc went off the track on turn 17 of lap 63.
As a result of the race standings, Red Bull dropped down to third in the constructors standings, while Ferrari now only trails McLaren by 29 points for the top spot.
In the drivers standings, Verstappen’s lead dropped to only 47 points.
Four races and two sprints remain. While the constructors’ championship is a wide open battle, the drivers’ championship is still Verstappen’s to lose.
