College baseball player Chris Singleton’s mother killed in church massacre
A college baseball player lost his mother on Wednesday in the tragic shooting at a church in South Carolina that left nine dead.
Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, the mother of Charleston Southern University outfielder Chris Singleton, was shot and killed in what police are calling a hate crime. The 45-year-old was an assistant pastor at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where 21-year-old Dylann Roof has been accused of opening fire on the congregation. Coleman-Singleton was also a track and field coach at Goose Creek High School in Charleston.
CSU baseball coach Stuart Lake says Coleman-Singleton had a great relationship with the program.
“Chris’s mother was just that parent that as a coach you are proud to have as part of your program,” Lake said in a statement Thursday. “What she brought to our team is immeasurable.”
Singleton said Thursday that he forgives the shooter.
“We forgive, that’s one thing we are going to do,” he told NBC station WCBD. “She’s the best mom I could even ever ask for. Honestly, it’s going to be tough but I know we will get through it as a family.”
