A University of Kentucky cheerleader is facing some extremely disturbing charges after she was arrested over the weekend.
Laken Snelling, a 21-year-old competitive cheerleader and student at Kentucky, was arrested on Sunday after the body of her deceased newborn baby was found inside a closet at a residence near the Lexington campus.
According to a Lexington Police Department report that was obtained by WLEX-TV, officers found the infant “wrapped in a towel inside of a black trash bag” inside a closet after they responded to a call about an unresponsive baby. Snelling, who admitted to giving birth to the child, has been charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and concealing the birth of an infant.
The police report stated that Snelling “admitted to concealing the birth by cleaning any evidence, placing all cleaning items used inside of a black trash bag, including the infant, who was wrapped in a towel.” The cause of death for the infant is not yet known.
The University of Kentucky has confirmed that Snelling, a senior, has been a member of the school’s STUNT competitive cheerleading team for the past three seasons. The school said all other questions should be directed to the Lexington Police Department.
Snelling posted $100,000 bond on Tuesday and was ordered to remain on “home incarceration with no ankle monitor,” according to WLEX-TV. She has said she will live with her parents.
