A big name has emerged as a likely candidate for the North Carolina Tar Heels head coaching vacancy.
Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan is expected to be “at or near the top of the list” of targets for the Tar Heels, according to Jeff Borzello of ESPN. Donovan has resisted approaches to return to college before, but this time could be different.
Donovan won two national titles at Florida and is one of only a few coaches that has a resume worthy of the North Carolina job. He went 502-206 overall during his college career with Marshall and Florida, and reached four Final Fours during his career.
Donovan’s Bulls are likely to miss the NBA playoffs, which could make Donovan more interested as the timing would theoretically line up fairly well. Still, the NBA season does not end until April 12, which could complicate things as the Tar Heels will want a new coach in place as quickly as possible.
It was reported Tuesday that Donovan could consider leaving the Bulls this offseason. That report suggested Donovan would likely take a year off, but the North Carolina job might be too good to pass up.
Donovan is not the only big name being linked to North Carolina after the school’s decision to part ways with Hubert Davis.
